A packed house of 1,100 audience members at the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford leapt to their feet before the final button of New Bedford Festival Theatre's current production of HAIRSPRAY.
Susko, who has directed for Festival Theatre for the past five years, and Producer Armand Marchand, couldn't be more ecstatic over HAIRSPRAY's success. "We've wanted to do the show for a long time," Marchand shared, "but we waited until we were certain we could do it right." And done it right they have.
HAIRSPRAY won eight Tony Awards in its Broadway debut in 2002. With music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman, book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, HAIRSPRAY relays a message of inclusion and acceptance set in 1960's Baltimore. New Bedford Festival Theatre's cast is stellar with New Yorkers LauraMarie Rondinella as Tracy, Aaron Fried as Edna, Kristopher Ward as Seaweed, and La'Nette Wallace as Motormouth Maybelle, leading the talented and dynamic cast.
With explosive direction and choreography by Michael Susko, colorful costumes by Aaron Gendreau-Visco, a Laugh-In style set by Trevor Elliot, lighting by Dan Jentzen, and foot-stomping musical direction by Juan Rodriquez, New Bedford Festival Theatre's HAIRSPRAY is not to be missed!
HAIRSPRAY has only four more performances: Thursday, July 26th @ 7pm, Friday, July 27th @ 7:30pm, Saturday, July 28th @7:30pm, and Sunday, July 29th @ 2pm. Ticket prices range from $45 to $30. To purchase tickets visit www.zeiterion.org.
