Elm Shakespeare Company continues its new play reading circle series with an open reading of The Taming of the Shrew Sunday, June 7 from 2-6pm, at Trinity Bar and Restaurant, 157 Orange St.

In "circle-style" readings, parts are assigned by the seating order at the table and held for only one scene at a time. All parts are up for grabs including Kate, Petruchio, Bianca, Gremio, Baptista, and more as the group makes their way through the play and around the table.

"Shakespeare's most outrageous comedy, The Taming of the Shrew introduces one of theatre's great screwball double-acts, a couple hell-bent on confusing and outwitting each other right up to the play's equivocal and controversial conclusion," Shakespeare's Globe

Some copies of the text available to share, but participants are free to bring a favorite collected works, dog eared paperback, or tablet app.

Participation in the reading is strongly encouraged, but by no means required - though this is less of a performance than a casual engagement with and shared appreciation for the timeless work of William Shakespeare.

Elm actor and Resident Teaching Artist Jeremy Funke will moderate discussion between acts (or after particularly complicated scenes) to make the work accessible for all. Breaks from the action are encouraged in order for guests to partake of Trinity Bar and Restaurant's excellent food and drinks menu.

The series will break for the summer as Elm Shakespeare Company prepares for it's 20th Anniversary production, Twelfth Night in August, and resume in September with readings of Henry V and October with Macbeth.

A donation of $5 to cover the essentials is encouraged.
