Eastbound Theatre, a division of the Milford Arts Council, is delighted to present the second show of its 24th season, the hilarious and touching Sylvia, by A.R. Gurney.
American playwright A.R. Gurney, best known not only for Sylvia but also his plays The Dining Room, and Love Letters, is a Yale graduate with 48 plays and 4 novels to his name. He even wrote the first musical ever produced at the Yale School of Drama (Love in Buffalo) while in attendance at the school. His work often centers around declining upper-middle-class characters, whom Gurney modeled after his own experiences.
Sylvia is directed by Kevin Pelkey, and with a unique blend of humor and tenderness the play addresses the challenges of a couple entering a new stage of life. Greg and Kate have been raising children in suburbia for twenty two years when they decide to take advantage of their empty nest and move to Manhattan. In the throes of this upheaval and a classic mid-life crisis, Greg falls for Sylvia - an adorable Labrador/Poodle mix he finds wandering in Central Park. Unfortunately, Greg's wife Kate is not nearly as smitten. Although Greg sees Sylvia as a new confidant and escape from his increasing anxiety and confusion over his job and his age; Kate sees her as competition for Greg's affection. Will Greg and Kate be able to work out their issues and incorporate Sylvia into their home and their lives?
As Director Pelkey explains, "Sylvia is a funny and heart warming story that a lot of people can relate to. The character of Sylvia the dog being the antagonist in the relationship of Greg and Kate is really humorous; and having an actress play the dog just brings it to a different level."
