Now that fall is officially here, local arts patrons are heading back indoors for evening activities and Stamford's Curtain Call has lots on tap with their 24th season. And while year-round entertainment at Stamford's Sterling Farms Theatre Complex may have seemed an impossible dream back in 1972, (when The Kweskin Theatre opened) "The Impossible Dream" is just one of the many popular songs from shows on deck in the coming year.
This award-winning, nonprofit theatre company has more than 150 performances scheduled over 40 weekends between The Kweskin Theatre and The Dressing Room Theatre, including: RENT, DEATHTRAP, SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE SUICIDE CLUB, MEET ME ST. LOUIS, A MERRY MULBERRY STREET MUSICAL, BEAU JEST, MAN OF LA MANCHA, ALL MY SONS, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and FOLLIES. Interactive murder mysteries, comedy nights, concerts and other special events are on tap as well.
"Flex Pass subscriptions have been on sale to past subscribers since late May and are currently on sale to the general public," said
Lou Ursone, Curtain Call's executive director. The organization has now sold nearly 13,000 tickets for the season.
This comes as no surprise to the hundreds of area residents who have often been shut out of performances which are routinely sold out. "We are so fortunate that each of the past four seasons has seen at least 94% of our performances completely sold out, but it is also frustrating to turn people away, Ursone said.
Hoping to serve more patrons than ever, Curtain Call has scheduled more performances of each production to try to meet demand. "In the season we just finished, we added performances to almost every production we ran," Ursone said. Their production of GYPSY, the last in the season, was completely sold out by the end of the opening weekend, but no additional dates were able to be added due the July 4th holiday weekend. "We've added more Thursday nights and Saturday matinees this year and hope to reach more than 30,000 patrons," Ursone said.
The first two weekends of October see the continuation of two productions at this busy theatre complex. RENT continues in The Kweskin Theatre through October 11 while DEATHTRAP runs through October 12 in The Dressing Room Theatre.
This local arts group has been consistently recognized for outstanding programming for many years: in August 2012 they were noted as the Most Popular Theatre in Connecticut in a state-wide Facebook poll run by the CT Department of Tourism; in 2011 they received The Governor's Award for Excellence in Culture & Tourism; and every year since 2005 they have been named Fairfield County's Best Local Theatre (and Best Venue, Best Local Arts Organization) in a variety of other polls.
