The Friends of Square One Theatre Present "An Evening with Brett Elliott, Executive Director of the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center"

Elliott makes no bones about liking equal amounts of the arts and hockey as well as mac and cheese. The final general meeting of The Friends of Square One Theatre will feature special guest Brett Elliott, the Executive Director of the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center dubbed as 'The Kate' in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. The evening is scheduled at 7pm on Wednesday, June 6 (2018) in the Lovell Room of the Stratford Library located at 2203 Main Street in Stratford, Connecticut. There will be a social gathering with attendees following Elliott's presentation.

'The Kate' is located in a building with a rich, century-long history now celebrating the legacy of one of America's finest actresses. After state-of-the-art renovations, The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center opened in 2009, committed to bringing diverse arts and culture to the Connecticut shoreline for all ages.

According to Carole Fanslow, President of The Friends of Square One Theatre, "In the early days of Stratford's American Shakespeare Theatre Katharine Hepburn was an audience favorite and we want to let Fairfield County know about this very special arts center named in her honor in Old Saybrook." Brett Elliott is prepared to tell us all about 'The Kate' and its impact in Connecticut. Following stints in the DePaul University/Chicago Shakespeare Theater MFA program, and his success at an American College Theater competition sponsored by The Kennedy Center snagged Elliott a fellowship at Waterford's Eugene O'Neill Theater, which also introduced him to The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, and former executive director Chuck Still, who tapped Elliott as his successor. According to Elliott, "Our audiences at 'The Kate' feel really close to the act on stage. Ninety-five percent of our acts are out in the lobby after the show having casual conversations with audiences. His job encompasses making decisions based on what he knows about his audience and what they want to see.

Old Saybrook is strategically located between New York and Boston, which is amazing for routing program opportunities. He points out there are a number of regional theaters in the area...the O'Neil, Goodspeed, Hartford Stage, Long Wharf and others. The fact that a state this size can sustain all of the great arts and culture is amazing.

Programming at 'The Kate' is focused on is how to get the 18 to 35-year-olds, in the door. Elliott's job is to schedule events relevant for all age groups. 'The Kate' has only 250 seats, but last year alone 26,000 people attended shows.
