The Bijou Theatre presents Madama Butterfly on Sydney Harbor as a part of their Opera in Cinema Series playing on Monday, September 29th at 6:00pm. Tickets are $20 for general admission seating.

One of the world's most spectacular events, Handa Opera on Sydney Harbor, is returning to cinema screens in September 2014 with a modern retelling of Puccini's tale of love and honor, Madama Butterfly. This is the third opera performed on the magnificent water stage, suspended over the harbor against a backdrop of the Sydney Opera House and the Harbor Bridge. This outdoor spectacle includes a giant sun and moon - both 12 meters wide - that will rise from the water to hang above the stage where Japanese soprano Hiromi Omura will portray tragic Cio-Cio San with her co-star, Georgy Vasiliev, who performs the role of Pinkerton.

Past Handa productions include La Traviata, featuring a giant chandelier floating above the stage, along with last year's Carmen with spectacular costumes and staging. Each year the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbor gets bigger and better! And yes, there will be fireworks, of course!

The film runs for approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes including one 15-minute intermission. It is performed in Italian with subtitles.

This presentation of Madama Butterfly on Sydney Harbor will be accompanied by an introductory session with Dr. Jeffrey Johnson of the University of Bridgeport music department.
