There will be a post-show discussion immediately following the Hartford Stage performance with Cinestudio Co-founder James Hanley and other special guests. You will discuss both productions of Macbeth - Where do the director's visions take Shakespeare's bloodiest tragedy? Does Shakespeare ignite the same spark on screen as on stage?
Polanski's rarely seen film is often thought to be a reaction to the brutal murder of his wife Sharon Tate and their unborn child by followers of Charles Manson. Shot on the bleak Northumberland coast, is it a brooding and brutal cri de coeur, startling in its immediacy in the wide screen 35mm film format (UK/US, 1971. 120 minutes.) http://www.cinestudio.org/
Macbeth at Hartford Stage runs through November 10. Shakespeare's swift and relentless tragedy uncovers the terrifying consequences of blind ambition. In medieval Scotland, a savage world of ghosts, witches and bloody battlefields, a dark prophecy leads a warrior and his wife past the point of no return. (2 hours, 20 minutes.)
