Costumes are encouraged when the Columbus Symphony and conductor Albert-George Schram fill the Capitol Theatre with fun and lively music just right for young audiences in a one-hour kids' concert on January 8. The CSO's PNC Arts Alive Concerts for Kids are funded by a grant from PNC Arts Alive, a three-year, $1.5 million initiative of The PNC Foundation that supports visual and performing arts groups with the goal of increasing arts access and engagement in new and innovative ways.
"We know what art can do, how it changes perspectives, even changes lives. From classical music and fine art to dance and theatre, we're committed to keeping the arts alive in central Ohio," said Michael Gonsiorowski, PNC regional president for central Ohio.
Butterflies, dragons, and fairies will come to life through the music of Edward Elgar's beloved musical suite for children, The Wand of Youth, featuring the McCord Players from Worthington City Schools under the direction of Janet Hale. The program will also include Lowden's Disney Magic, Anderson's Fiddle Faddle, Mendelssohn's Scherzo from Midsummer Night's Dream, Hayman's Pops Hoedown, Frost's The Bear Went Over the Mountain and A, You're Adorable, and Wendel's Orange Blossom Special.
Children and parents are invited to come dressed as their favorite fairy tale character and enjoy pre-concert activities that begin at 2pm in the Capitol Theatre lobby. Pre-concert activities include musical crafts with the Columbus Museum of Art, instruments to play, temporary tattoos, lessons on conducting, meeting CSO musicians, and more.
