On August 1st, 2010, Shadowbox will take their widely popular original musical, Back to the Garden, to German Village's Schiller Park. A one-night-only free performance of this "journey through the Woodstock festival" will bring to life rock ‘n' roll history for audience members who will relax on blankets under the sun and stars for this unique experience.
"We're hoping for huge numbers for this show so we're making it an all day event," said Stev Guyer, Shadowbox's Executive Producer and CEO. Shadowbox is encouraging people to arrive early if they want to sit and see the show. "The seating area can only fit about 1500," explains Guyer. "There is space on the sides and above the seating valley but those may have a somewhat restricted view."
Because crowds are expected to arrive in the early afternoon Shadowbox plans to bring in a handful of food vendors. "We're hoping that people will get into the spirit of Woodstock, picnic during the day, enjoy the park and then experience the show that evening."
To help guide the mass numbers of people, Shadowbox is relying on it's dedicated core of volunteers. Just like at Woodstock in '69 the volunteers will be part of the Please Force, a band of communes, led by Hugh Romney (aka Wavy Gravy), who came together to keep the peace and provide food and water relief to the record-breaking crowds that descended upon Bethel NY.
In similar fashion to Romney, the Shadowbox volunteers will be dressed in white jumpsuits to identify themselves. They will assist Shadowbox staff by helping patrons find the performance area, vending area, and public restrooms. Additionally, some will act as roadies for the band, and man the "nerve center" during the show. "We're counting on the Please Force to help us make this event work," continued Guyer. "Without them we simply wouldn't have enough bodies to pull the whole thing off!"
Back to the Garden will begin at 8:00 PM on Sunday, August 1st. The performance is free and donations will be solicited. All proceeds will benefit Actors' Theatre. For more information visit the Shadowbox website at
