Shadowbox Live presents the musical Reefer Madness, opening April 22nd at The Shadowbox Live Building.
Reefer Madness takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to the 1936 propaganda reel, poking fun at the classic movie by portraying the “dangers” of smoking marijuana.
“The movie was meant to be a shock tactic used to frighten people away from marijuana,” says director Julie Klein. “But out of context and in this day and age it’s just ridiculous! The musical takes the propaganda and turns it on its ear with catchy songs and over-the-top acting.”
A play within a play, Reefer Madness takes place in any-town USA, where innocent teenagers are seduced by the weed and its peddlers, and turned instantaneously into “reefer fiends.” It’s a slippery slope for some, as moral degradation gives way to murder.
The show features a mix of metaperformers from the 65-member troupe, and stars Renee Horton, Jamie Barrow, Tom Cardinal, Mary Randle, Nikki Fagin, Donathin Frye, Andy Ankrom, and Leah Haviland.
