Feel like a little time traveling? For its second Schiller Park production of the season, Actors' Theatre of Columbus is offering up Twelfth Night, set not in the 17th century, when it was written, but in the 1980s, nearly 400 years later. Check out a first look below!
This production examines Shakespeare's classic comedy against the backdrop of 80s' pop-culture, gender dynamics, and the self-reflection of the "me generation."
Sound intriguing? Mandy Fox the director of this production says the new setting allows audiences to see one of Shakespeare's most popular and most musical of all his comedies in a totally new light. After all, when the play involves mistaken identities, ambition, pining lovers, and plenty of mischief, how much difference could a century or four make?
As Fox points out, "This production is a great one for seasoned Shakespeare buffs or to introduce future fans to the Bard! It's going to be totally gnarly, Dude!"
Twelfth Night is performed every Thursday through Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. from June 27 through July 28 in the Amphitheatre in Schiller Park, located in historic German Village. Attendance is free, but donations are appreciated. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs to make the experience more comfortable.
Actors' Theatre of Columbus is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to present plays by William Shakespeare and other time-honored playwrights with relevance to a contemporary audience. Established in 1981, Actors' Theatre of Columbus productions run each weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day on the Schiller Park stage in German Village. In addition, Actors' Theatre of Columbus regularly performs at venues throughout the city including the Columbus Commons and Easton Town Center.
