Conductor, composer, arranger, producer, and songwriter Steve Hackman conducts his Brahms V. Radio creation that synthesizes all four movements of Brahms' First Symphony (1882) with eight songs from the Radiohead album OK Computer (1997) including "Paranoid Android," "Karma Police," "No Surprises," and "Let Down." As Radiohead's melodies are altered to coexist with Brahms' harmonies and the motives of one interjected into the other, what results is an astonishing journey into a new world of discovery, deconstruction, reconstruction, and recreation.

The Columbus Symphony presents Brahms V. Radiohead at the Ohio Theatre (39 E. State St.) on Saturday, January 21, at 8pm. Tickets are $25-$68 and can be purchased at the CAPA Ticket Center (39 E. State St.), all Ticketmaster outlets, and www.ticketmaster.com. To purchase tickets by phone, please call (614) 469-0939 or (800) 745-3000.

The 2016-17 Pops Series is made possible through the generous support of season sponsor American Electric Power.

About Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

The reputation and status of German composer and pianist Johannes Brahms is such that he is sometimes grouped with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven as one of the "Three Bs" of classical music. Brahms composed for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, piano, organ, voice, and chorus, and many of his works have become staples of the modern concert repertoire. An uncompromising perfectionist, he was also a virtuoso pianist and premiered many of his own works. Within the diligent, highly constructed nature of Brahms' compositions lies a highly romantic nature.

Brahms spent at least 14 years completing Symphony No. 1 in C minor. He himself declared it took 21 years from sketches to finishing touches. It was premiered on November 4, 1876, in Karlsruhe, then in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany.

About Radiohead

Formed in 1985, English rock band Radiohead consists of Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments), Ed O'Brien (guitar, backing vocals), Colin Greenwood (bass), and Phil Selway (drums, percussion, backing vocals). The group was signed in 1991, and released their debut single "Creep" in 1992. It became a worldwide hit after the release of their debut album, Pablo Honey (1993).

Their popularity and critical standing rose in the UK with the release of their second album, The Bends (1995), and their third album, OK Computer (1997), propelled them to international fame. With an expansive sound and themes of modern alienation, it is often acclaimed as a landmark record of the '90s and one of the best albums of all time.

Radiohead has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. Their work places highly in both listener polls and critics' lists of the best music of the 1990s and 2000s. In 2005, they were ranked 73rd in Rolling Stone's list of "The Greatest Artists of All Time," also naming Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien to their list of greatest guitarists and Thom Yorke in their list of greatest singers. In 2009, Rolling Stone readers voted the group the second-best artist of the 2000s.
