In "On the Edge," a collection of short plays exploring the depth and breadth of the theatrical experience, Short North Stage aims to introduce audiences to the works of Harold Pinter and Samuel Beckett and their complex, thought-provoking themes.

Featuring plays by Pinter and Beckett, two 20th century playwrights whose work often focuses on individuals' interpretation of humanity and life itself, "On the Edge" was selected by Katherine Burkman, an emeritus professor of English at Ohio State and one of the leading scholars on the writings of Pinter and Beckett.

Burkman is also scheduled to perform in the show as the sole character in one of the short plays.

"On the Edge," which consists of one longer, 40-minute play and three short plays, is a unique sampling of the two writers' extensive collective portfolio of work, and is organized to engage both newcomers and theater veterans alike.

"These plays are works that educate and elucidate the human experience," said Rick Gore, executive producer of Short North Stage. "While more complex than the more audience-friendly offerings of our main-stage, they are rarely seen and deserve to be experienced by those who love theater."

Gore said he looks forward to seeing how the audience responds to the actors' interpretation of such powerful scripts.

"Pinter has written that what is not said is as important as what the actors do say, so seeing how the actors interpret the silences and the ambiguities of the poetic and complex dialogue is theatrically exciting," he said.

Gore added that he hopes viewers come away with a sense of "reflection, intellectual stimulation and an appreciation" for the work and care that has gone into producing a collection of plays rarely presented in the local theater scene.

"It is a beautifully curated selection of plays that showcases these authors," he said. "In two hours, including an intermission, audience members can experience the essence of Pinter and to a lesser extent, Beckett. (The selection) offers a sampling of the style and themes of both men."

"On the Edge" is scheduled to be performed through Sunday, March 15, in the Garden Theater's Green Room venue.

Tickets may be purchased on the Short North Stage website.

The Garden Theater is located at 1187 N. High St. in Columbus, Ohio.
