The Cleveland Orchestra's 2016-17 Music Study Groups will begin on September 27, 28, and 29 at convenient community locations throughout the Greater Cleveland area. The classes cover music from the Severance Hall subscription season of Cleveland Orchestra concerts. The series is organized into three parts so that registrants may choose a series length that best fits their schedule - selecting from fall, winter, and/or spring.

Music Study Groups are presented by the Orchestra with support from the Women's Committee of The Cleveland Orchestra and other generous donors to the education programs of The Cleveland Orchestra.

DATES OF CLASSES

FALL: September 27 - November 17

WINTER: January 3 - March 9

SPRING: March 28 - May 25

Registration is easy and convenient. Mail-in registration brochures are available at all Music Study Group locations, Severance Hall information racks, and online by clicking here. People may also phone their registration with credit card payment to Education and Community Programs at Severance Hall at 216-231-7355. Mail-in registrations with payment by check or credit card can be sent to: Cleveland Orchestra Music Study Groups c/o Education & Community Programs, Severance Hall, 11001 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106-1796.

Music Study Groups explore music from the Orchestra's upcoming classical music subscription concerts through lively presentations and listening activities. Participants, ranging from beginners to seasoned listeners, learn about the lives and musical styles of composers in addition to the cultural and historical context of the music, while also developing keen listening skills.

Music Study Group course fees are discounted for the choice of a longer series length: $100 for a three-part series; $80 for any two-part combination of fall, winter, or spring; and $50 for any one part. Some sites do not offer a full three-part series, but registrants may extend their series at another location.

The Music Study Group registration fee includes the 2016-17 Listening Guide, a spiral-bound booklet of program notes and musical themes from featured compositions that is printed with generous support from Jan Harding and George Coleman.

Registrants may choose from five different community locations and meeting times, but may also make up a class at any location if they have a conflict on a particular class day.

Music Study Groups are presented by The Cleveland Orchestra in partnership with Cuyahoga County Public Library (at three of their branches) and in partnership with Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library and St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Cleveland Heights. The Cleveland Orchestra's partnership with Cuyahoga County Public Library extends to other Orchestra programs presented at their library branches, including Musical Rainbows on the Road for preschoolers, chamber music concerts by Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra members, and interactive hands-on Family Workshops (leading up to the Orchestra's annual Public Square summer concert), where young people explore orchestral instruments and learn more about the music featured on the Public Square concert.

Music Study Groups are led by Rose Breckenridge, who earned her Ph.D. in music from Case Western Reserve University. In addition to her Music Study Group presentations, Dr. Breckenridge serves as the regular Concert Preview speaker for The Cleveland Orchestra's FridayMatinee concert series and other select Cleveland Orchestra concerts at Severance Hall.
