The Community Engagement & Education Department at PlayhouseSquare is hosting its annual "Fall for the Arts" evening of professional development for Northeast Ohio educators of all grade levels and subjects on Wednesday, October 28 from 4 - 8 p.m. The registration fee is $10. On Tuesday, October 27, the department is hosting the free educator orientation for the Annual English-Speaking Union's National Shakespeare Competition from 4 - 8 p.m. Both events take place in the Idea Center® at PlayhouseSquare (1375 Euclid Ave.).

"We look forward to welcoming educators to these fall activities and to helping them find new ways to integrate the arts into their classrooms," stated Colleen Porter, director of community engagement & education. "Arts integration captures student attention, increases understanding and provides a creative outlet in the classroom that is beneficial for both teachers and students."

This year's Fall for the Arts has a focus on new media arts activities. Keynote speaker Angelica Allende Brisk, award-winning producer and director, will speak about using dramatic and documentary video production as compelling vehicles for learning. During the rest of the evening, educators move through a series of 30-minute workshops of their choosing. Topics include media standards, performing for the camera, stop motion animation and story boarding.

Fall for the Arts is appropriate for classroom teachers, arts specialists, administrators and teaching artists. Refreshments will be served. Information and registration is available online at www.playhousesquare.org/education or by calling 216-348-7909.

The English-Speaking Union's National Shakespeare Competition is designed to develop high school students' critical thinking and speaking skills. Educators who attend the orientation on October 27 will receive details on the competition and information on how to prepare their students to deliver a Shakespearean monologue or sonnet with understanding, clarity and feeling. Presented in partnership with Great Lakes Theater Festival, the orientation is free. Refreshments will be served. Advance registration is required by calling Stephanie Reed at 216-771-4444 x3258 or sending an e-mail to reeds@playhousesquare.org.
