Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) and Teatro Público de Cleveland (TPC) present La Gringa (Spanish), a play by Carmen Rivera, directed by Ernesto Luna Camargo. The play will be performed in Spanish, with English subtitles, by TPC ensemble members and will run February 14 - March 2, 2019, in CPT's James Levin Theatre.
In this heartwarming and hilarious comedy, María Elena Garcia is excited to connect with her homeland and visit her extended family in Puerto Rico for the first time. María has grown up with an intense love for the island and even majored in Puerto Rican studies in college. Upon her arrival, and much to her surprise, María isn't exactly welcomed with open arms. Many consider her an American-a gringa. If she's a Puerto Rican in the United States and an American in Puerto Rico, is she a somebody anywhere? On her journey to fit in, María muddles through misperceptions and misadventures while searching for what we all seek: belonging.La Gringa (Spanish) will be performed in Spanish, with English subtitles.
According to La Gringa (Spanish) Producer and CPT Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan: "We are thrilled Ernesto is making his CPT mainstage directorial debut-this is a big step for Teatro Público de Cleveland and a testament to the growth of the ensemble and the individual artists who comprise the company. La Gringa is a beautiful story and, fun fact, the longest running Off-Broadway Spanish language play. We all long to fit in, to find home, to know who we truly are-longing is inherent in our search to belong. This play is hilarious and touching-an exciting exploration of our yearning for home, acceptance, and a true understanding of what's in our heart."
