MLK Community Service Awards to be Presented at Cleveland Orchestra Concert

On January 15 at 7:00 p.m., The Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Wilkins, performed its 37th annual concert in celebration of the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. The sold out concert featured the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Chorus prepared by William Henry Caldwell, and Sphinx Competition winner Thomas Mesa as cello soloist. The concert is being broadcast live on radio stations WCLV (104.9 FM) and WCPN (90.3 FM).

At the beginning of the program, Mayor Frank G. Jackson presented the 2017 MLK Community Service Award in three categories in recognition of the services and achievements of:

Adult: Posthumous, Lifetime Achievement: The Honorable Carl B. Stokes

Lifetime Achievement: George L. Forbes

Youth: Chelsea Hodge

Organization: Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. (AKA)

All have positively made an impact on Cleveland in the spirit and teachings of Dr. King. For more information, visit www.clevelandorchestra.com.

This year's Martin Luther King Jr. concert is part of the community-wide project, Stokes: Honoring the Past: Inspiring the Future of Cleveland, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Carl Stokes' election as mayor of Cleveland with a yearlong series of events designed to inspire a new generation of community leaders.
