PlayhouseSquare announces today that it has added FIDDLER ON THE ROOF to its 2009-2010 KeyBank Broadway Series, June 15-27, 2010 at the Palace Theatre. This production of the classic, Tony Award® winning musical gives Cleveland audiences a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Jerome Robbins' original Broadway direction and choreography, complete with the originAl West End production and 1971 film's star, Chaim Topol, in the role of Tevye. This PlayhouseSquare engagement is also significant because Topol has agreed to extend his commitment to the tour and make a special return trip from Israel to Cleveland exclusively for the two-week engagement.
A place on the KeyBank Broadway Series was made available for FIDDLER ON THE ROOF when the producers of DIRTY DANCING determined that its previously-announced tour is being indefinitely postponed. "The addition of Fiddler on the Roof to our season makes perfect sense," stated Gina Vernaci, Vice President of Theatricals for PlayhouseSquare. "It is a much beloved musical with iconic songs and choreography that both subscribers and individual ticket buyers appreciate. Plus, in Topol, we have a true star giving his momentous last performances as Tevye right here on the Palace Theatre stage! While we will miss Dirty Dancing, PlayhouseSquare is pleased that this change to our line-up still results in a solid, entertaining, and even historic KeyBank Broadway Series offering for all."
Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, the Tony Award® winning musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF has been lauded by critics and won the hearts of people all around the world with its rousing, heartwarming score that includes "Tradition," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "If I Were A Rich Man" and "Sunrise, Sunset".
A perennial hit since it first opened in 1964, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF has enjoyed critical acclaim for bringing to the stage a poignant story about the enduring bonds of the family. Now, the national touring production of this timeless musical brings the wit and wisdom of Tevye and his family to audiences throughout the United States with the reproduction of Jerome Robbins' famous masterpiece. Topol and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF were both nominated for the Academy Award® in their respective categories. While enlisted in the Israeli Army, Topol won the 1972 Golden Globe® for his performance in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. He is now joining this tour on the heels of a successful production in the South Pacific. In 1983, Topol reprised the role of Tevye in a London revival and, in 1990, he again played the part in a Broadway revival, and was nominated for a Tony Award® for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical.
In 1965, Jerome Robbins won matching Tony Awards for his direction and choreography of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. In this National Tour, both are recreated by Director Sammy Dallas Bayes, choreographer of the 1990 Broadway Revival.
