The Dayton Theatre Guild will hold open auditions for the fifth show of its 2008 - 2009 season, "The Cashier" by Glen Merzer, on Monday and Tuesday, March 2nd and 3rd, at 7:30 p.m. Auditions will be held at the future home of the Dayton Theatre Guild, 430 Wayne Avenue. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. "The Cashier" is directed by Sarah Gomes and produced by K.L. Storer.
The play is about an aspiring artist who takes a summer job in the mailroom at the IRS in Bakersfield, CA. He finds himself awash in the land of regulation without reason and reasons without explanation, and becomes caught up in the daily lives of his fellow workers with a very unexpected result.
Performance dates for the production are Fridays through Sundays, April 17 through May 3rd, 2009.
Director Sarah Gomes encourages men and women of all types and ages to audition. She is looking for the following:
Mr. Thompson, 40s - The friendly boss, keeping his authority yet also his rapport with his employees.
Ralf Leland, 20s - On a journey west from New York to find his artistic inspiration.
Dale, 20s - Ralf's fiancé back in New York pursuing her own dreams in a more 'East Coast' style.
Doris Dougherty, 50s-60s - The mail room's most senior employee who finally earns her long awaited retirement.
Melba, 40s-50s - Office busy body who believes the answers to all the employees' woes lies in a trip to church.
Emily, 20s - A refreshing young woman with a healthy attitude...and a diet to match.
Fred, 20s-30s - A simple man just trying to fit into the group the way he fits the mail into the slots.
Bob, 30s-40s - A 'run around' man whose severe limp has not kept him from a day of work or a single ball game.
Adeline, 40s-50s - Considering herself of a different breed then the other employees, she feels overworked. unappreciated, and indispensable.
Jimmy, 20s - The mail cart boy of very few words and very many 5 minute breaks.
Mrs. Dougherty, 70s-80s - Doris' elderly mother who still sees her 'little girl' as just that.
Denise, 18 - An ambitious girl being held back by a seemingly deadbeat boyfriend.
Painter (female) - 20s-30s - A woman in a man's world.
Larry, 20s - The new guy who's traveled and come back to settle in.
Cashier (male) - 25+ - A blind man who sees more than most around him.

The Dayton Theatre Guild opened with "Outward Bound" at the Dayton Art Institute in late 1945. The 1963 - 1964 season opened with "Night of the Iguana" at the Guild's current location at 2330 Salem Avenue, Dayton, OH 45406. Over 400 plays have been produced, offering good plays done well, and utilizing all-volunteer casts, crews and administration. The Guild will be moving to its new home in the Oregon District prior to the 2009 - 2010 season.
