Cleveland Public Theatre was founded in 1981 by James Levin. Levin had spent the previous three years as an actor and director at LaMaMa, the internationally renowned experimental theatre in New York City. Inspired by this experience, Levin modeled CPT on LaMama. His original goal of producing innovative original work dealing with provocative political and social issues featuring culturally and ethnically diverse artists was realized and continues to drive programming at CPT.

Cleveland Public Theatre supports all local artists and is committed to fostering the work of area playwrights and performers. Cleveland Public Theatre continues to seek ways to support new and local work. CPT serves developing work at different stages through Big [BOX], Little Box and The Dark Room.

CPT produces 6-10 plays a year. CPT's emphasis is to produce adventurous plays that are somehow outside the mainstream -- politically, aesthetically, socially, etceteras. We seek works that challenge and amaze. We are especially interested in works by minorities, women, and local writers (Northeastern Ohio). Submissions are considered for production and for staged readings in our Little Box Series.
