Technical Director - STREB, Inc.

POSITION SUMMARY

The TECHNICAL DIRECTOR is responsible for leading the technical and production management for STREB Inc., which includes the STREB Extreme Action Company, the STREB PopAction School, the España-STREB Trapeze Academy and STREB’s Educational and Community Engagement programs on and off-site. Reporting to the Artistic Director, working closely with the Executive Director, and collaborating with the management team, the Technical Director will facilitate the day-to-day technical and production needs at the STREB Lab for Action Mechanics

(SLAM); plan, advance, manage and execute all technical production elements for Company rehearsals, performances and tours, including scenic, staging, audio, video, lighting, rigging, budgets, and labor needs; oversee all technical and production elements of STREB’s education activities and special events. The Technical Director will also set, direct and ensure execution of protocols to ensure the highest standards of artistic excellence, patron satisfaction, compliance and safety are met for all engagements and activities.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

● Manage the day-to-day technical and production operations for all STREB Inc. activities including

rehearsal preparation and facilitation; equipment maintenance and safety inspection and troubleshooting; production logistics and artistic vision support;

● Oversee the technical direction, organization, planning and advancement of all Company performances and touring productions;

● Develop, communicate and oversee performer and instructor equipment safety protocols and

management;

● Collaborate with the Artistic Director and outside professionals in the technical design, drafting,

engineering and fabrication of company prototypes and final equipment;

● Recruit, hire, and supervise technical staff as required;

● Work closely with the Executive Director on strategizing and managing project, annual and capital budgets for all technical, equipment, inventory and facility needs;

● Support SLAM facility needs in conjunction with General Contractor and outside vendors;

● Provide technical and logistic support for Educational and Community Engagement Activities and Special Events;

● Provide technical guidance and support for other internal programming occurring on and off-site;

● Set protocols to ensure excellence artistic production quality and ensure safety standards are

communicated and monitored;

● Perform other related duties as directed;



EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

● Professional experience in Technical Direction and Production Management with a strong knowledge of all areas of technical production including event staging, scenery, rigging, sound reinforcement, production lighting, and audio & video production; thorough knowledge of structural and mechanical construction and safety protocols (materials, equipment, rigging and techniques);

● Experience in producing and supporting work in traditional and non-traditional theatrical environments, including outdoor venues, as well as experience working with and directing union and non-union stagehands;

● Ability to create technical drawings to 1) advance STREB's technical requirements for all engagements, 2) solve complex mechanical & rigging problems during creation periods, 3) draft prototype equipment for testing at SLAM;

● Ability to read, understand, and discern information from mechanical drawings with intermediate level drafting skills in Vectorworks or AutoCAD required;

● Strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills, integrity, high energy, creativity, a collaborative spirit, and the cultural sensitivity needed to work effectively in a diverse environment of artists, creative, and management teams, earning respect and collaborating with peers and management;

● Ability to take initiative, multi-task, and work graciously in a fast paced and high pressure environment, with ability to anticipate and solve problems before they arise, follow through with tasks in a timely manner, ensure even the smallest items are handled with no error, deal with highly sensitive information and materials, and demonstrate a sense of urgency and act responsively.

● Passion and curiosity about the design, engineering and maintenance of unique action equipment and machinery;

● Interest in the performing arts with an ability to help realize an ambitious artistic vision while attending to the smallest details of production

ABOUT STREB

Founded by Elizabeth Streb in 1979, STREB has performed in theaters large and small, on the streets and in sports stadiums, and has been commissioned to create new work for large scale events and festivals from the Whitney Museum of American Art’s groundbreaking to the London 2012 Olympic Festival. In January 2003, STREB moved into a vacant facility in Williamsburg Brooklyn and transformed the space into the STREB LAB FOR ACTION MECHANICS (SLAM) which now serves as the home for the STREB EXTREME ACTION performing company, the

STREB PopAction School and the Espana/STREB Trapeze Academy. As a performance and presenting venue and an open access education and rehearsal space, SLAM creates community through interaction and experimentation serving approximately 10,000 people annually - 5,000 audience members at nearly 40 shows; 800 students weekly at approximately 60 weekly classes; 3,000 city school children and community organization constituents; 200 artists who rent SLAM to create and present work, teach and take class; 600 tweens and teens who attend monthly SLAM ACTION CLUBs; and 250 children who attend SLAM summer camps.
