New Works Director - National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT)

The National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT), a not-for-profit membership service organization in New York City, seeks a full-time New Works Director to join our team. NAMT’s 245 members are some of the leading producers of professional musical theatre in the world and include non-profit theatres, new work development organizations, colleges and universities, independent producers and industry individuals. Programs include two conferences per year, the annual Festival of New Musicals, two granting programs and many other services. www.namt.org.



THE POSITION

The New Works Director for the National Alliance for Musical Theatre is a full-time, salaried position that reports to the Executive Director. This position is a vital part of the 6-person NAMT team that is dedicated to providing outstanding service to our members.

Duty highlights include, but are not limited to, the following:

-Manage the submission and selection process of the eight shows for the annual Festival, supporting the Festival Committee which is composed of musical theatre field leaders.

-Produce the Festival of New Musicals, including artistic support and coordination of each show, venue management, supervision of seasonal staff, assessment of front of house needs, programming of complementary concerts/showcases and management of all other logistical, budgetary and programmatic needs.

-Consult with the shows/writers throughout the Festival process on all areas of the presentation and provide support after the Festival to aid in their development.

-Evaluate and revise New Works and Festival processes to advance progress toward NAMT’s stated commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility for BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and disability communities

-Program and plan Writers’ and New Works Roundtables with input from the Alumni Writer Committee.

-Curate the content and oversee the publication of New Works News, a monthly e-newsletter.

-Manage the full grant cycle for the Frank Young Fund for New Musicals, from the call for applications through final reports of the selected grantees.

-Manage the Writers Residency Grant cycles, twice a year, with the New Works Committee.

-Develop and launch a new writing Fellowship program for NAMT, as outlined in our strategic plan.

-Update and support NAMT’s digital new works programs including the New Musicals Map and Nuts & Bolts Guide.

-Provide support, input and collaboration on NAMT’s other member programs.



This is a full-time salaried position that is ideal for someone with experience both in developing and supporting new work and in producing and managing large events. Starting salary will be in low-mid 50s, commensurate with experience, with excellent benefits.



The successful candidate will be:

-comfortable managing multiple programs simultaneously.

-a high-energy, hands-on individual who remains calm, focused and with sense of humor intact when under pressure.

-capable of—and excited to—represent NAMT in front of large groups to advocate for the organization and the field.

-ready to engage our membership and writers, through committee work, programming and site visits around the country.



JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required

-5+ years experience producing and managing large events

-3+ years of administrative responsibility in an office setting

-Experience with developing new work

-Strong interpersonal skills and ability to multi-task independently in a fast-paced office

-Exceptional organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail

-Experience supervising staff

-A love for and extensive knowledge of musical theatre

-Proficiency in Microsoft Office



Recommended

-Knowledge of regional theatres and the not-for-profit structure

-Experience in budget development and management, for programs and events

-Experience with executing and negotiating contracts

-Knowledge of theatre unions and policies

-Experience working with Boards and Board committees

=Knowledge of Salesforce, WordPress, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator

-Experience casting musical theatre projects and knowledge of musical theatre actor and artist community
