Hours: Exempt full-time (40 hours), some nights and weekends
Starting Salary: $33K-$36K

JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Education (DoE) is responsible for the implementation of Mill Mountain Theatre’s education initiatives and outreach programming. As the only equity professional theatre in the Roanoke Valley, Mill Mountain Theatre feels a special responsibility for training the next generation of theatre artists and building an appreciation of the art form in the next generation of audiences. The DoE is responsible for overseeing Mill Mountain Conservatory as well as representing the interests of MMTC families and students in board and staff meetings. The DoE is responsible for organizing all educational events including classes, performances, and fundraisers. They are also responsible for directing and organizing all aspects of MMTC shows in addition to their teaching responsibilities.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Serving as the primary contact for MMTC students and families
Preparing material for classes every semester (12 during regular semesters and 10 in the summer) by choosing and cutting music, choreographing for classes, selecting monologues, scenes, poetry, and sometimes writing their own material
Reaching out to MMTC families individually to recruit for semester enrollment
Teaching classes and private lessons
Assembling and managing teaching staff, including accompanists, teaching assistants, musicians, college interns, and high school interns
Working with the Producing Artistic Director to assemble an artistic team and organize actors and parents for all conservatory shows
Attending weekly staff meetings held by the Producing Artistic Director
Scheduling and organizing coffee houses
Scheduling, organizing, promoting, and facilitating free master classes for the students of greater Roanoke; this involves contacting the artists, confirming payment, creating a lesson plan, designing a flyer, email correspondence with students, and organizing social media marketing with local community and arts organizations
Organizing, promoting, and hosting the annual MMTC Ice Cream Social every year on Labor Day; this is a free event for MMTC and Roanoke families to meet the staff and their peers as well as learn about MMTC
Scheduling, marketing, and holding auditions for MMTC conservatory shows
Teaching as outreach to city and county schools through after-school teaching
Serving on the Artistic Planning Committee to assist the Producer in planning future seasons for MMT, including but not limited to Conservatory programming
Attending board meetings, staff meetings, and management meetings
Corresponding with the Education Committee of the Board of Directors
Attending important private or community events to represent MMT
Organizing, rehearsing, and leading student actors in community performances at locations like Parks & Arts, Historic City Market, Hotel Roanoke, and the Taubman Museum
Organizing, marketing, and hosting the summer cabaret fundraiser for the conservatory show; this includes rehearsal, creating a set list, designing the flyer, contacting local businesses for their involvement, online promotion, set up, and clean up
Helping with and organizing students to assist with strike of shows
Attending technical work calls for productions
Organizing and marketing the season announcement event
Assisting with actor move-in and transportation when needed
Assisting with professional auditions when needed
QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree (preferred: Theatre, Musical Theatre, Theatre Education, or related field)
Professional musical theatre performance experience
Minimum of two years education or related experience in an Equity theatre
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Organizational skills
Flexibility and friendly attitude
The desire to promote a positive team environment
The ability to work well with staff, volunteers, and board
Residency within reasonable driving distance of Roanoke
Own vehicle
The ability to work evening and weekend productions/special events
The ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds
The ability to read, write, and speak English clearly
Knowledge of MS Office programs and the ability to work well with databases
Housing within driving distance of Roanoke (if relocating, MMT will provide housing for the first 4 weeks of contract)
WORKING CONDITIONS
Mill Mountain Theatre operates on a flex work schedule. This job will require regular work on nights and weekends.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This job requires physical engagement with students in a classroom and/or rehearsal setting. The applicant should be comfortable working on their feet for significant stretches of time.
