You Can't Take It With You May 5 - May 23, 2010
By George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart
The Sycamore family may seem insane, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder! So when Tony Kirby (of the upper crust Kirby family) falls in love with Alice Sycamore, he brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening, the culture shock resounds through both families. Alice decides that marriage with Tony is out of the question; but Tony, will not give her up, and in the end it's the Kirby family that is converted to the happy madness of the Sycamores. Along the way, we meet a Russian Grand Duchess, Alice's daffy sister Essie, a mad ballet instructor and the strange Mr. DePinna who lives in the basement and manufactures fireworks!
Smokey Joe's Cafe June 2 - June 20, 2010
The Songs of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller
Leiber and Stoller, as much as anyone, virtually invented rock 'n' roll; and now their songs provide the basis for an electrifying musical entertainment that illuminates a golden age of American culture. In an idealized '50's setting, the classic themes of love won, lost and imagined blend with hilarious set-pieces and slice-of-life emotions. Songs include: "Jailhouse Rock", "Love Potion #9", "Hound Dog", "Kansas City", "Poison Ivy", "On Broadway" and more. Smokey Joe's Cafe isn't just great pop music; it's compelling musical theatre!
Cottonpatch Gospel July 7 - July 25, 2010
Book by Tom Key, Russell Treyz
Music and Lyrics by Harry Chapin
This "Greatest Story Ever Retold" musical is based on The Cotton Patch Version of Matthew and John by Clarence Jordan where the Gospel is presented in a setting of rural Georgia with country music songs. Composed by Harry Chapin, who wrote such famous tunes as "Taxi" and "Cat's in the Cradle", Cottonpatch Gospel was his final and perhaps best work. Great country flavored songs include "Somethin's Brewin' in Gainesville", "Mama Is Here", "Julbilation" and "One More Tomorrow". Drama critics loved this show and so did a broad spectrum of religious commentators.
The Nerd August 4 - August 22, 2010
By Larry Shue
One of the funniest modern comedies around, The Nerd concerns Willum Cubbert who has often told his friends about the debt he owes Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, "you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you". So Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party. But his delight soon fades. Rick turns out to be a hopeless "nerd"-a bumbling oaf with no social sense, a buffoonish sense of entitlement and no tact. As Rick stays on and on, his continued presence leads to one uproarious incident after another, until the normally placid Willum finally decides to go ballistic! - a dire development which, happily, is staved off by the surprising "twist" ending of the play.
Thoroughly Modern Millie September 8 - September 26, 2010
Book by Richard Henry Morris
Music by Jeanine Tesori
New Lyrics by Dick Scanlan
A high-spirited musical romp that had all of New York dancing the Charleston! It's the zany new 1920's musical that took Broadway by storm! Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It's a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Based on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers, like "Gimme, Gimme", "Not for the Life of Me", "Forget About the Boy" and the title track "Thoroughly Modern Millie"!
