Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park announced today its summer theatre camps and performance academy programs for June and July 2017 are on sale now. This year's offerings include expansions into satellite locations in Mason and Middletown, a three-week musical performance academy and additional one-week options.
Open to students in first through twelfth grades, theatre camps offer students the opportunity to learn and practice acting, improv, playwriting, scenic design, makeup and other theatrical skills from a Tony award-winning theatre.
"The Playhouse provides a process-based learning environment where campers experience the production of a play from beginning to end, learning the foundational skills of performing arts from local professionals and educators," says Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park director of education and community engagement Daunielle Rasmussen.
The Playhouse offers one-week day camps available in June and July that provide five different courses throughout the week, which lead up to a 10-minute performance piece for family and friends at the end of the week. Courses follow a unique, artistic theme that influences the lessons. Themes include Aladdin, Adventures in Wonderland, The Wonderful World of Oz, Peter Pan and The Jungle Book.
Performance academy programs, introduced last year and continued for 2017, include productions of Beauty and the Beast, Jr. and Sleeping Beauty, Kids. Campers can also choose World Premiere Academy, which lets them create a devised play from the very beginning and manage the production in its entirety.
The Playhouse is also introducing satellite location camps for performance academy programs this summer and will hold one-week camps in Middletown and Mason. Campers in these communities have the opportunity to attend a one-week, process-based production camp of Sleeping Beauty, Kids.
"Our satellite camps are an exciting addition for The Playhouse," says Rasmussen. "By working directly within the camper's communities, we get to introduce more students to these programs that are designed to build confidence, strengthen communication skills and develop a sense of ensemble and community."
Campers do not need previous theatre experience and no audition is required for attendance. The Playhouse also offers before care (8 a.m. to 9 a.m.) and after care (4:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) to give families more flexibility. The Playhouse is supported by the generosity of more than 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community Campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund The Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
