Director Tyrone Phillips, a first-generation Jamaican American, reimagines Illyria in the Caribbean isles—exploring how different cultures come together, celebrate, and become a community. Shakespeare’s sparkling romance finds the spirited Viola washed ashore in an unfamiliar land, separated from her twin brother during a shipwreck. Disguised as a man, she takes a job with the charming Duke Orsino—but Viola is soon entangled in a hilarious love triangle as mistaken identities abound. Within the warmth of the Courtyard Theater, you’ll be transported by the sounds of calypso and reggae filling the air, for as Shakespeare wrote... “if music be the food of love, play on.”
