Jim Cartwright’s The Rise and Fall of Little Voice takes place in a small factory town in Northern England, circa 1990. It tells the story of a young girl called "Little Voice”, or LV, who is cripplingly shy. She spends her time in her bedroom, listening to old records — Judy Garland, Edith Piaf, Marilyn Monroe, et al — that were given to her by her father, who has since passed away. Her mother, Mari, drinks and rarely stops talking. When Mari starts dating a talent scout (Ray Say), he discovers that LV can impersonate the singers she loves. When Ray Say puts LV onstage at a local cabaret club, their lives are turned upside down.
