The Prom is a comedic musical with a heartwarming message, created by a talented team. The music was composed by Matthew Sklar, with lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Bob Martin and Beguelin also collaborated on the book, or script, based on an original concept by Jack Viertel. The Prom debuted at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre in 2016 and then moved to Broadway in 2018, becoming a hit.
The story follows a group of down-on-their-luck Broadway actors who seize a chance to revive their careers and, more importantly, do some good. When they hear about a small-town Indiana high school banning a lesbian student from bringing her girlfriend to prom, they decide to intervene. The flamboyant foursome travel to Indiana and clash with the conservative locals while advocating for the students' right to love who they want.
The Prom garnered critical acclaim, winning the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. Its lively music, humorous script, and positive message about acceptance continue to resonate with audiences.
