From his definitive reinvention of the “jazz guitar” sound on his 1975 debut album Bright Size Life, Pat Metheny has been one of the most accomplished musicians on any instrument, constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of the guitar and to bring new generations of players and artistic versatility into the fold. This season Metheny is continuing his Side-Eye project, featuring upcoming musicians who have particularly caught his interest while on the road for as many as 100 shows a year. The 20-time Grammy winner and DownBeat Hall of Famer began the project in the spirit of his formative experiences playing alongside veteran musicians and developing his style from the demands of their music: “I find myself inspired by how newer players deal with the musical challenges that come with my older tunes, and at the same time I find myself intrigued with the possibilities of what might be possible in writing new music just for them.”
