The greatest writer in US history visits the country’s greatest general.
In the summer of 1885, Ulysses Grant raced to finish his memoirs before a terminal illness would end the effort for him. The great general labored over his writing on the front porch of his New York estate as well-wishers gathered on the lawns simply to see the man, having heard of Grant’s illness and hoping to catch a glimpse of the general before the end.
Visitors included luminaries of the age: soldiers from Union and Confederate forces, politicians, foreign dignitaries and the illustrious Mark Twain himself. There they met, Grant deep in his memoir campaign while Twain was immersed in the development of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The two great men - each a longtime admirer of the other - made time to converse, to share stories and to nurture a remarkable friendship.
