One of the longest-running musicals in Broadway history, "A Chorus Line" returns to The Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 Schaumburg Court, Schaumburg. HOTT Productions, NFP-Helping Others Through Theatre first presented "A Chorus Line" at this very venue 25 years ago. Seminaro was inspired by the choreography designed by the show's creator and original Choreographer Michael Bennett and Co-Choreographer Bob Avian. Performances of "A Chorus Line" will be presented at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5. A live orchestra and free parking enhance your theater experience.
Reserved tickets priced $20-$22 are available online at helpingothersthroughtheatre.seatyourself.biz.
The original production ran for 6,137 performances from April 1975 until April 1990, making it one of Broadway's longest running musicals. The show was an unprecedented success, receiving nine Tony Awards and the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The show was conceived, directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett, Bob Avian was co-choreographer, music was composed by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban, and the book by James Kirkwood, Jr., and Nicholas Dante.
The development of "A Chorus Line" was innovative as it was born from life stories told into a tape recorder in 1974 over multiple nights by chorus dancers. These stories were interwoven into the book of the show and as it worked through its workshop phase, the stories of the actors in the show were also incorporated into the script. Never had actors been such an integral part of a Broadway musical's creative process.
Set on the bare stage of a Broadway theater, "A Chorus Line" is centered on 17 Broadway dancers auditioning for a spot in the chorus of a new Broadway show. One by one, the dancers come forward to share the stories that shaped their lives and their paths to becoming dancers. The show's score features the iconic musical hits "I Hope I Get It," "The Music and the Mirror," "One" and many more.
