Victory Gardens Theater hosts a free screening of the award-winning documentary Stories We Tell by Oscar-nominated Canadian director Sarah Polley. Presented as part of the additional public programming to surrounding Victory Gardens' current production, Appropriate by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, the screening is on December 2, 2013, at 7:00pm at Victory Gardens Biograph Theatre, 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue.
Stories We Tell examines the relationship between truth and memory, demonstrating that truth depends on the storyteller. Throughout the film, Polley interviews members of her family in an attempt to uncover her family's history. Polley quickly discovers that the family's true history has many different versions. As in Appropriate, Stories We Tell proves that our own version of a shared narrative informs our attitude towards others as well as our understanding of our individual self.
Stories We Tell had its world premiere at the 2012 Venice Film Festival. It has won numerous awards, including Best Feature Length Documentary at the 2013 Canadian Screen Awards and was included in the Toronto International Film Festival's list of "Canada's Top Ten" feature films of 2012.
Originally from Toronto, Canada, Sarah Polley began acting at a young age. From 1987 to 1988, Polley made her name in the title role of the Canadian television series Ramona. In 1990, Polley got a lead role on the acclaimed TV series The Road to Avonlea, a part that she played for five seasons. Polley made her directorial and screenwriting debuts in 2007 with Away From Her, an adaptation of Alice Munro's story The Bear Came Over the Mountain, a beautifully observed drama about an elderly married couple dealing with the wife Alzheimer's disease. The film earned a handful of year-end awards and nominations, garnering Polley a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay from the Academy. In 2011, she released her sophomore directorial effort, Take This Waltz. The movie, starring Michelle Williams as a young married woman contemplating cheating on her husband, was a festival favorite and was released in the United States in the summer of 2012. Her latest film, Stories We Tell, is her first feature-length documentary.
