Theatre at the Center, 1040 Ridge Road in Munster, is heating things up with a thrilling new doo-wop musical, The Signal, tonight, April 4 at 4 and 8 p.m. An alluring show for all ages, The Signal is filled with harmonious music and interactive dancing among audience members. The Signal recounts the stories of legendary artists who have become influential icons, while recapturing the soundtrack of their lives. Marked by Rick Kogan from the Chicago Tribune, as the show having a "strong rhythm-and blues base", the 11-member cast is an "ebullient bunch" that is ready to share some exhilarating fun with their audience.
The blended nostalgia of radio, steel mills, gangs, and family, the show spotlights Gary's Vee-Jay Records, the female Black-owned label that landmarked the Blues, pioneered R&B, triggered the Four Seasons, and introduced The Beatles to America. Vee-Jay Records was also the force behind Motown and heavily influenced Gary's own musical ambassadors, The Jacksons.
Featuring the heart-stopping voices of Gary natives and Rhythm & Blues Pioneer Award winner The Spaniels, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Willie Rogers of The Soul Stirrers, and one of the nation's most well-known a cappella groups, Stormy Weather, The Signal is a canvas of hits by Jerry Butler, The Spaniels, Jimmy Reed, The Dells, and other notable icons from around the country. From Gospel to Rock, from Doo-Wop to the King of Pop, the coal-fired harmony endures and uplifts in an innovative mix of music and story.
