The Bricklayers continue their collaboration with Collectif Masque (France) performing the English Language premiere of FredEric Fort's comedic mask theatre adaptation of Stevenson’s classic macabre tale, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Ford’s adaptation is translated into English by Bricklayer Kyle Cadotte, and is directed by Bricklayer Patrick Goulding.
A play with music, the lyrics are translated by Emmanuel Camargo, set to an original score by djAppel and David Bon, the team behind the music of Bricklayers’ Twelfth Night. Etienne Champion of Collectif Masque again designs the masks. Previews begin November 24 at Theatre Wit (formerly Bailiwick Arts Center) with opening night of December 8 and running Saturdays at 2PM and 8PM and Mondays at 7PM, through December 20, 2008.
One of the most important voices in contemporary French theatre, FredEric Fort is the artistic director of Annibal et ses Elephants in Colombes, France. His mask adaptations of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Secrets of Livingson, and The Island of Dr. Moreau have toured throughout Europe and South America. Fort’s adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a farce, playing on the lunacies of a repressed society. Dr. Jekyll is a progressive doctor who is sure he can eliminate grief from life with medication. Wishing only the best but achieving the worst, he puts his family, his friends, and ultimately his own life into grave danger.
All performances of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are free, though donations are welcomed. “The holidays—and holiday shows—are very expensive, especially for families. Our production of Dr Jekyll... is free so that people who might not be able to afford a big holiday show this year can still enjoy a classic story brought to life with magic and sophistication”, says Bricklayer Matt Trucano.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (co-produced with Collectif Masque) features Bricklayers Kyle Cadotte, Tabitha Noble, Patrick Goulding, and Matt Trucano. With Matt Peterson.
