The MAC Sets 2016-16 Performing Series

McAninch Arts Center (MAC) at College of DuPage is pleased to announce its 2016-2017 Season Performance Series. Subscriptions are on sale now for an exciting selection of music, dance, theater, comedy and literature events showcasing a roster of world-class headliners. Single tickets go on sale at the Box Office Saturday, Aug. 6 at 11 a.m.

"For three decades, the MAC has been a place where culture and community connect," observes MAC Director Diana Martinez. "Our top-notch, customer service-focused box office, diverse world-class programming, informative free MAC Chats before or after an event, the chance to take in the latest exhibition in the Cleve Carney Art Gallery, full service concessions, amazing acoustics and free parking have combined to make a trip to the MAC a thoroughly enjoyable experience from beginning to end. This year, we've kicked things up a notch not only with a treasure trove of headliner talent, but by adding VIP service for select shows which includes a private, pre-show cocktail and hors d' oeuvres reception and dessert and coffee at intermission."

A few of the highlights of MAC's 2016-2017 Performance Series events coming to the Belushi Performance Hall include "Stephen Schwartz and Friends," a concert of popular Broadway tunes performed by the Academy, Grammy and Tony Award-winning composer and musical theater icon and some of the greatest talent from the Great White Way (Oct. 7); Grammy Award-winners Herb Alpert and Lani Hall, former lead vocalist for Sérgio Mendes & Brazil '66 (Oct. 15); an entertaining presentations by Rick Steves, the beloved host and writer of the popular public television series "Rick Steves' Europe" (Oct. 22); a must-see concert by Grammy Award-winning American singer and keyboardist Bruce Hornsby (Oct. 28); American country star and Grammy Award-winner Wynonna Judd in Wynonna Judd & the Big Noise Christmas (Dec. 2); and "Seven Things I've Learned: An Evening with Ira Glass," starring the host of NPR's award-winning "This American Life" (Feb. 25).

Additional noteworthy shows include the dancer-illusionist troupe MOMIX in "Opus Cactus" (Sept. 10); acclaimed comedian Kathleen Madigan (Dec. 3); a concert featuring some of the best musical talent from Cuba in "The Havana Cuba All Stars: Havana Nights"(Nov. 6); the international classical, hip-hop, rock R&B and bluegrass music sensation Black Violin (March 11); and entertaining satiric looks at political shenanigans of the day by The Second City (Oct. 1) and the Capitol Steps (April 1).

The MAC's Playhouse Theatre will again be home to Club MAC, an intimate cabaret setting with café tables, wine, and great artists. This year's Club MAC performances will be announced at a later date.

It is a year of anniversary celebrations as New Philharmonic marks its 40th season beginning with "Passionate Virtuosity - Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky" featuring guest pianist Wael Farouk performing Prokofiev's Concerto No.1, (Sept. 24-25); and "An Evening of Gershwin!" (Oct. 22-23) featuring special guests soprano Kimberly Jones, baritone Bill McMurray, pianist Marta Aznavoorian and the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus under the direction of Nancy Menk. For the holidays, audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy a return engagement of Von Heidecke Chicago Festival Ballet's "The Nutcracker" with Tchaikovsky's beloved score performed live by New Philharmonic (Dec. 17-18). And New Philharmonic rings in the new year with three New Year's Eve Concerts featuring guest tenor Jesse Donner (Dec. 31). New Philharmonic opens 2017 with Gilbert and Sullivan's popular operetta "The Mikado" (Jan. 28-29) and their season wraps up with ENCORE! (April 8-9) featuring the return of CSO assistant concertmaster and principal violinist David Taylor for the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole and Saint-Saens' Symphony No. 3 (Organ).

This season, Buffalo Theatre Ensemble (BTE) resumes its place as the MAC's resident professional Equity company for the 30th Anniversary of the company's founding. BTE's three-play 2016-2017 Season includes "Don't Dress for Dinner," a farce by French playwright Marc Camoletti (Sept. 9-Oct. 9). David Lindsay-Abaire's "Good People" (Feb. 3-March 5) and Alan Ayckbourn's 2005 comedy, "Improbable Fiction" (May 5-June 4). All performances take place in the Playhouse Theatre.

Also worth noting, in honor of College of DuPage 50th anniversary, the MAC's Lakeside Pavilion hosts a free concert by Chicago's Tributeasaurus as David Bowie. The concert coincides with the College's Laps with the Chaps Food Truck Rally and Sunset 5K run on Sat. Sept. 17. For more information visit cod.edu/5k.

MAC's Touring Series is only part of the rich and diverse selection of 2016-2017 programming presented at the MAC. Other programming will include the popular Global Flicks free international film series running in February and March 2017; educational SchoolStage performances for pre-school through middle school age students, more than 30 College performances in music, dance and theater and seven exhibitions of visual art at the Cleve Carney Art Gallery. Details will be announced at a later date. In advance of the 2016-17 season, the MAC will hold its 2016 Lakeside Pavilion Free Outdoor Summer Series. Programming runs July 14-Aug. 26 and includes a Friday evening Pop Music Series, a Thursday evening Jazz Concert Series and Thursday evening Family Movie Series. As part of their current international tour, Moses Pendleton and the internationally renowned dancer-illusionist troupe MOMIX join forces for a mesmerizing production that brings the landscape of the American Southwest to the stage with dynamic acrobatic images of cacti, slithering lizards, fire dancers and more. Russian National Ballet Theatre - "Swan Lake"

The Russian National Ballet Theatre, direct from Moscow, brings "Swan Lake" to life at the MAC with this lavish, full-scale musical production with a company of 50 dancers. One of the most beloved fantasies of all time, this breathtaking performance is sure to be a hit for the young and old alike. "The Washington Post calls Russian National Ballet Theatre's production, "a cut above many of its rivals...the real thing."

New Philharmonic presents "The Mikado"

Gilbert and Sullivan's most performed light opera has been in constant production for the last 130 years. "The Mikado" is a comedic masterpiece of British political satire. America's original jazz dance company and a local icon, this magnificent ensemble of dynamic performers have been wowing audiences around the country for more than 50 years. Known for its high-energy, high-impact artistry, GDC continually receives critical and audience acclaim for its original programming. "The 10 dancers in this company are fearless athletes with Olympian stamina who bring a rousing conviction and unabated dynamism to everything they do," says the Chicago Sun-Times. After the performance, 50 lucky audience members will have to opportunity to join the company on stage for a master class (all skill levels welcome).

Rick Michel and His 12-Piece Orchestra - "Frank... A Musical Journey"

Rick Michel returns to the MAC, this time with his full 12-piece orchestra, to commemorate the beloved Frank Sinatra with new songs and stories, as well as some of his greatest hits. Rick Michel conveys the richness of Frank's life by performing the signature songs of the times, which were written by some of the finest composers and lyricists of the 20th Century. Woven together by a poignant narrative, the performance paints a portrait of Frank that provides audiences an intimate glimpse of the life he lived . . . his way.


The Five Irish Tenors
