The Association for Women Journalists-Chicago is now accepting applications for its three $1500 scholarship awards-two AWJ Scholars awards and the annual Joy Darrow Memorial Scholarship.
"These scholarships are just one way AWJ-Chicago recognizes the potential of outstanding women journalists and supports their future achievements, " said Suzanne Hanney, managing editor for StreetWise newspaper and AWJ's scholarship committee chair.
First awarded in 2005, AWJ's annual scholarships honor talented women studying journalism in the Chicago region. Students who have demonstrated an interest in issues important to women are especially encouraged to apply.
The Joy Darrow Memorial Scholarship was first awarded in 2008 to honor the legacy of Joy Darrow, a reporter, photographer, editor, as well as a human rights and racial justice activist known for her strong commitment to ethics, fairness, and equality.
"This scholarship goes to a woman student pursuing a career in alternative journalism, including covering racial issues, international issues, and civil-rights issues," said Joy Darrow's daughter, Tracy Baim, editor and publisher of Chicago's Windy City Times." Joy Darrow was a pioneer in both mainstream and alternative media, and we want this scholarship to help a journalist seeking to create her own path in the media landscape." Joy's three children (Tracy, Marcy and Clark Baim) help fund the scholarship.
Students can learn how to apply for the scholarship on AWJ's website at

The public is invited to come to our annual meeting in January 2010 where we'll be recognizing the women and awarding them their checks. More information will be posted at http://www.awj-chicago.org as soon as date and place is confirmed.
