Hailing from the University of Michigan, Team StarKid is a true Cinderella story for the modern age. In just over a year, StarKid has reached nearly 50 million views on YouTube and captured the attention of national media such as Entertainment Weekly, "Access Hollywood," "Entertainment Tonight," and MTV. Now based in Chicago, StarKid Productions remains committed to pioneering the internet as a new outlet for theatre distribution.
StarKid first invaded the internet in July 2009 with A Very Potter Musical - a fan-made parody that premiered on YouTube and immediately went viral. Filmed during a live performance through University of Michigan's Basement Arts, the production was an instant hit with fans of the Harry Potter series (as well as the staff of Entertainment Weekly) and quickly garnered nearly 2 million views. In March 2010, StarKid's second production, the original musical Me and My Dick, blasted its way onto the Billboard charts, landing at #11 for "Original Cast Recording" - a first for a college production. The show not only solidified StarKid as a real player in comedy musicals, but also grabbed national attention from the likes of Billboard.com and blogger Perez Hilton. In May 2010, StarKid returned to Hogwarts with A Very Potter Sequel, receiving over 4,000 ticket requests for 400 available seats. The production - which was named to Entertainment Weekly's "Must List" - premiered to packed houses with fans from across the country lining up hours before each show.
StarKid's first Chicago production, Starship, is a comedy musical set in the distant future on a far-off world inhabited by a race of giant alien insects. Starry-eyed dreamer "Bug" has never quite fit into bug-society, and inside the pus-vesicles that serve as his heart, he longs for something more. When his planet is visited by a starship of colonizing humans, "Bug" sets out on an adventure to find love and save the world - while reminding us all what it means to be human.Starship will be presented at the Hoover-Leppen Theatre at Center on Halsted, 3656 North Halsted, from Friday, February 11 to Wednesday, February 23 at 7:00 p.m. There will be no performance on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. Tickets, priced at $25, are available online at www.brownpapertickets.com.
