Tanya Saracho (author of Kita y Fernanda, Our Lady of the Underpass and El Nogalar) returns to 16th Street ENFRASCADA (A Hoodoo Comedy of Jarring Proportions), playing April 5 – May 12, 2012 at 16th Street Theater, 6420 16th Street in Berwyn, with a press opening of Thursday, April 12 at 7:30 PM. JEFF-Nominated Keira Fromm (Redtwist's Lobby Hero) directs. ENFRASCADA, the second offering in 16th Street's Season Five 2012: Love, Faith and the Unknown, follows the successful, extended run of Accidental Rapture.
When a terrible split turns Alicia's world upside down, she turns to Folk Magic to heal her suffering. With the help of her friends and some enchanting magi, Alicia mines the underworlds of Brujeria, Santeria and Hoodoo for magic recipes, age-old traditions and ancient jar spells looking for a cure. Based on real and extended exchanges with practitioners of each craft, Enfrascada is performed in English with a sprinkle of Spanish.
"Because of the speed with which it went from the first draft to a full production -a mere two months- without any space for development, Jarred was more of a proposal than a fully realized script. And because I co-directed and acted in it, my perspective might suffered from a bit of myopia. While I am a supporter of a playwright directing or being in her/his own work, I have to admit that the workshop production I received at Clubbed Thumb (New York 2011) -where I was able to just be the playwright- was the key to finishing the script: It was like the missing ingredient to my spell."
Featuring Yadira Correa (of MACHOS, Jarred and Our Holiday Stories), Dana Cruz (of Jarred) Lorena Diaz (of improv duo Dominizuelan), Patricia Lavery, and Yunuen Pardo, who played the lead in Saracho's El Nogalar at Goodman Theatre.
With designs by Associate Artists Kurt Sharp (Scenic), Mac Vaughey (Lights), Jesse Gaffney (Props). Joined by Harrison Adams (Sound) and Joelle Beranek (Costumes).
