TIC Announces Spring 2010 Stagings, Includes Danceworks 2010 & More

The 30th anniversary "Danceworks 2010" concert (April 23 to May 2) and a modern staging of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (May 21 to 30) are among the Theatre and Interpretation Center (TIC) at Northwestern University's 2009-10 spring stagings.

"Waa-Mu 2010: Keeping Time" (April 30 to May 9) marks the final year that Jeff Award-winning director Dominic Missimi will direct the student written musical revue.

May events include a production presented by the department of performance studies, "The Occidental Moon: Colonial Desire, Space Exploration, and Culture Fetish in India" (May 14 and 15). Performances of "ready ready go," the 2010 Senior Dance Concert, will be held from May 26 to 28.

All the programs are open to the public and will be held at various venues on Northwestern's Evanston campus, as noted. Ticket information follows each event listing.

MAY 2010 THEATRE EVENTS

Waa-Mu 2010, "Keeping Time," 8 p.m. Friday, April 30; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, May 1; 2 p.m. Sunday, May 2; 8 p.m. Thursday, May 6; 8 p.m. Friday, May 7; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, May 8; and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 9, Cahn Auditorium, 600 Emerson St., Evanston campus. The 79th annual Waa-Mu production will take an irreverent journey through the annals of history. A time-traveling showcase of song and dance, "Keeping Time" will depict civilization's momentous events and history's most important cast of characters. This will be the final Waa-Mu show directed by Joseph Jefferson Award-winning theater faculty member Dominic Missimi. Performance Studies, "The Occidental Moon: Colonial Desire, Space Exploration, and Culture Fetish in India," 8 p.m. Friday, May 14, and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, May 15, Annie May Swift Hall, Alvina Krause Studio, 1920 Campus Drive, Evanston campus. Created and directed by performance studies doctoral candidate Pavithra Prasad, "The Occidental Moon" examines the nature of Indian subjectivity in a global context. Beginning with the cultural impact of the 1969 American moon landing, "The Occidental Moon" explores India's colonial impulses through moments in popular music, dance, film, public discourse and literature. In October 2008, in a postcolonial search for frontiers of national subjectivity with regard to advancement, the Indian Space Research Organization launched the lunar impact probe Chandrayaan-1. The probe captured images and data during its 25-minute descent and shattered upon impact, scattering the fragments of a nation's desire on the surface of the moon. "The Occidental Moon" explores new definitions of the nation-state that lead us to the margins of our earthly existence and back. Admission is free.

Barber Theater, 30 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston. Shakespeare's fantasy of lovers, actors and the fairy kingdom is one of the most beloved comedies of all time. With sleight-of-hand that subverts the line between dreams and reality, Laurence Olivier Award-nominated and Joseph Jefferson Award-winning director David H. Bell creates a modern world at once musical and magical, raucous and outrageous, where reveries threaten to become a darkly sensual nightmare. The 30th anniversary Danceworks concert will feature choreography by nationally renowned Northwestern faculty and guest artists, including Jeff Hancock, Archana Kumar, Susan A. Lee, Billy Siegenfeld, Molly Shanahan, Joel Valentin-Martinez and Meghann Wilkinson. The program is an eclectic celebration of Jump Rhythm Jazz, modern, classic jazz and contemporary dancE. Northwestern faculty member Susan A. Lee, founding director of the Dance Program in the department of theatre, is the artistic director of the annual spring show. A special 30th anniversary Danceworks 2010 program at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 2, also will feature performances by choreographers Jeff Hancock, Molly Shanahan, Billy Siegenfeld and Brandi Coleman. Post-show discussions will be held after the April 25 and 29 performances. "ready ready go," Senior Dance Concert, 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 26; 8 p.m. Thursday, May 27; and 8 p.m. Friday, May 28, Ballroom Theatre, Marjorie Ward Marshall Dance Center, 10 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston campus. The culminating project of Northwestern University senior dance majors and minors, "ready ready go" is choreographed, produced and performed by students under the guidance of faculty advisors Susan A. Lee and Jeff Hancock. The concert will conclude the seniors' undergraduate studies and serve as an introduction of their work to the professional dance community. This year's senior choreographers include Laura Cohen, Michaela Federspiel, Calyn Guberman, Katerina Herder, Katherine Hill, Anna Kahane, Keith Miller, Pallavi Sriram, Michala Stock, Abigail Suskin and Monica Thomas. The show also will feature work by guest choreographer and Northwestern alumna Julia Rhoads. Rhoads, named one of the "25 To Watch" by Dance Magazine in 2010, is the artistic director of the Chicago contemporary dance theater Lucky Plush Productions. The School of Communication's Dance Program will host a reception following the Friday, May 28, performance that is open to the public.
