Fear not fans of subversive holiday entertainment. Theater Wit is re-gifting Chicago with its 11th annual production of The Santaland Diaries, based on David Sedaris' true comic tale of his hilarious stint as one of Santa's elves at Macy's Department Store.
Hailed as the "24 funniest pages ever written in the English language," Sedaris' uproariously funny, droll reminiscence of his less than merry misadventures as a Christmas elf gone bad is a must-see celebration of the desperation of unemployment, the rampant consumerism and the soul-sucking "cheer" of the holiday season. Don't miss Theater Wit's annual invitation to go behind-the-scenes with Santa's most reluctant helper as he struggles to keep his dignity while being humiliated by fellow elves, scary Santas, selfish shoppers and their obnoxious tots during Macy's Christmas rush.
The Santaland Diaries is adapted for the stage by Joe Mantello and directed by Theater Wit Artistic Director Jeremy Wechsler. Mitchell Fain dons his candy stripe tights for his seventh consecutive outing as Santa's snarkiest elf, the always-irreverent Crumpet.

David Sedaris became an overnight sensation after he first read The Santaland Diaries on NPR's Morning Edition on December 23, 1992. His autobiographical tale is still known as the best workplace exposé ever, and secured his discoverer, Chicago Public Radio host Ira Glass, his long-running show This American Life. With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, Sedaris has since become one of America's preeminent humorists. He is the author of Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice, as well as collections of personal essays, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and When You Are Engulfed in Flames, and his most recent book Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls.
