Chicago Slam Works puts the spotlight on storytelling with "The LitMash" - an action-packed slam competition that combines the art forms of poetry, comedy, storytelling, music and creative non-fiction. "The LitMash" on Monday, April 7 features "The Moth Story Slam" Chicago host Brian Babylon among others. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at the door. "The LitMash" on April 7 features Brian Babylon (comedian, storyteller and host of Chicago's "The Moth Story Slam"), Janna Sobel (storyteller and host of "Here's the Story"), Alicia Swiz (storyteller and host of "Pop Goes Alicia"), Adam "Defcee" Levin (poet and rapper), Stephanie Douglas (storyteller) and Lawrence "Binkey" Tolefree (Poet/Comedian/Rapper).
Moderated by Chicago Slam Works Executive Director J.W. Basilo, "The LitMash" features a variety of performers, poets, comedians, storytellers, and musicians competing for the favors of audience members. Each performer has six minutes to impress the audience and judges. The judges are five audience members chosen at random. The winner of the evening receives a cash award as well as boasting rights.
Headlining the April 7 "The LitMash" is storyteller and comedian Brian Babylon. Babylon is a Chicago-born comic and radio host. The self-proclaimed "Prince of Bronzeville" is a fixture in Chicago's rich comedy community. He has been making a name for himself outside of Chicago as well, placing in the finals of the New York Comedy Contest in 2009. He has performed in LA at the historic Comedy Store and Laugh Factory, and in the UK at Jongleurs comedy club in London. Currently, Babylon hosts and produces The Morning AMP radio show on Vocalo 89.5FM, a sister station of Chicago Public Radio. He is also one of the newest additions to the popular NPR weekly news quiz show "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me", contributes to BBC Radio and hosts "The Moth Story Slam" in Chicago.
Additional performers include; Janna Sobel, a veteran of chicago's storytelling scene and host of "Here's The Story" a monthly storytelling event; Alicia Swiz, an interdisciplinary artist and educator and host of the "Pop Goes Alicia" show; Adam "Defcee" Levin, a rapper, published poet and teaching artist; Stephanie Douglas, a storyteller; and Lawrence "Binkey" Tolefree, a Chicago poet, comedian and rapper.
