Chicagoland jazz singer and composer Denise La Grassa, along with guitarist John Kregor and visual artists Nancy Pirri and Sholo, presents Sunshine In The Toxic Ballroom, a multimedia female empowerment music event commemorating MLK Day 2019.
Sunshine In The Toxic Ballroom explores in song the issues women face to lead safe, productive lives. Incorporated throughout the song-cycle are visual images by Chicago artists Nancy Pirri and Sholo. Female healers, creatives, teachers and preachers sing for those past and present women who have worked tirelessly as agents of change. Referencing Dr. King's civil disobedience movement to the current #MeToo moment, La Grassa and fellow artists unite to speak against the sexist and racist climate that stubbornly persists. For decades, La Grassa has been using her voice to uplift, inform, educate and speak for marginalized citizens. Sunshine in The Toxic Ballroom addresses women's struggle for empowerment, for gender equality and spiritual healing in the midst of global challenges. Songs and images of female energy extend as a remedy to the current political landscape. The hope is that sunshine women will strive for greater female political and spiritual participation in the toxic ballroom to uplift peacekeeping efforts around the world.
