Hell in a Handbag Productions
presents the return of
Summer Camp 2
Cabaret readings for serious Campers
Hell in a Handbag Productions welcomes the return of the sun with
Summer Camp, a series of camp-tacular Cabaret readings of works we're
considering for future seasons. Pitch a tent and sit around our neon
camp-fire with us as we present the Chicago premieres of three works
sure to help you forget the winter blues.
L'imitations of Life
directed by David Cerda - From the Running with Scissors theater
company in New Orleans comes a wicked parody of the classic three
hankie tearjerker by director Douglas Sirk about race, mothers and
daughters and emoting. Handbag ensemble member Ed Jones channels post
murder trial Lana Turner in all of her scene chewing glory.
Marked
Down Woman - In the style of Hell in a Handbag's Caged Dames, Marked
Down Woman tells the tale of Mary Strauber, a smart dame and clip joint
hostess for Johnny Vanning, the most ruthless gangster in New York.
Things seem to be going swell for Mary until her squeaky clean kid
sister visits and gets tangled up in the seedy underpinnings of Mary's
secret life at Club Intimate. The DA wants Mary to testify against her
gangster boss but nobody has ever done that and lived! Dames, gangsters
and murder!
Eating Raoul, The Musical directed by Matt Gunnels
-Paul and Mary Bland dream of opening a gourmet restaurant but they
need money to do that. Why not lure sexual deviants to their apartment
and kill them? When their swarthy, sexy janitor Raoul learns of their
scheme, he partners with them to help dispose of the bodies. That's
when things get complicated... Based on the cult 1982 film Eating
Raoul this musical adaptation is a perfect summer treat for those who
enjoy their musicals with a twist.
