Steep Theatre Company and the New York-based Naked Angels will be teaming up this fall to
workshop a new play by playwright Sarah Burgess titled Earthsiege: Commence. The week-long project will culminate in two public staged readings of the script at Chicago's Steep Theatre on Tuesday, November 15th and Wednesday, November 16th.
Naked Angels' Artistic Director Andy Donald will direct the reading which will feature Steep ensemble members Caroline Neff, Julia Siple, and Peter Moore. This project marks the first collaboration between the nationally esteemed New York company and Steep, which has quickly become one of the most acclaimed voices in Chicago theater.
Chelsea Doors - under house arrest, trapped in a two-room apartment with her dad, with nothing at her disposal except the Internet and a phone and a box of Clif bars - is about to take over the world. Earthsiege: Commence is a modern day thriller for the stage, mixing elements of a Hitchcock potboiler with a searing character study of a lost soul determined to connect with
humanity... by destroying it.
"We're beyond excited that Sarah's wildly adventurous, gonzo play is our company's first chance to dip our toe into the Chicago theater scene," says Naked Angels Artistic Director and Earthsiege director Andy Donald. "There's also something about her writing that cries out for a mighty Chicago ensemble, and our friends at Steep Theatre seem like a perfect fit. We hope this
brief workshop sparks many dual-city collaborations between our companies in the very near future."
"We've admired Naked Angels' body of work for quite some time," adds Steep Artistic Director Peter Moore. "The initial prospect of collaborating with them on a new piece was exciting enough; when we were introduced to Sarah's script, which is an incredibly fearless exploration of some very treacherous territory, well, we were chomping at the bit to get to work and we're thrilled by the possibilities of this new partnership." Earthsiege: Commence has been developed with Naked Angels for the past two seasons and this workshop with Steep also marks its debut in the company's ongoing Angels in Progress development series.
