Silk Road Rising co-founders, Artistic Director Jamil Khoury and Executive Director Malik Gillani, have announced three staged readings for Summer 2012: Danny Bernardo's Mahal, Yussef Guindi's The Mummy and The Revolution, and Shane Sakhrani's The Doctor is Indian. All three staged readings will be presented in the company's venue in Pierce Hall at The Historic Chicago Temple Building at 77 W. Washington St. in Chicago. Tickets are $5.00 for each reading.

Mahal
Friday, June 8th at 8pm
Saturday, June 9th at 8pm
Sunday, June 10th at 2pm
Written by Danny Bernardo
Directed by Greg Kolack

In Danny Bernardo's Mahal, a Filipino American family redefines itself after loss & reclaims its culture. After the death of the Reyes family matriarch, new relationships blossom, old ones are rediscovered, and family bonds are tested, as a long repressed secret from the homeland threatens to tear the family apart.

Mahal skillfully and compassionately interweaves themes of cultural identity, assimilation, homophobia, and inter-generational conflict as it sets out to explore a 21st century American family in a world of hyphenates.

Each staged reading of Mahal will be followed by a Q&A session with playwright Danny Bernardo.

The Mummy and The Revolution
Friday, July 13th at 8pm
Saturday, July 14th at 8pm
Sunday, July 15th at 2pm

Written by Yussef El Guindi
Directed by Stuart Carden

It's Abbott and Costello meet the Arab Spring in Yussef El Guindi's political farce The Mummy and The Revolution. An Egyptian revolutionary, an American collector of antiquities, and a reanimated mummy – just three of the characters in this sexy, slap sticky romp where ideological opposites attract and the "new" Middle East is never too far from the same old same old.

A comedic gem from the writer who brought the acclaimed plays Ten Acrobats in an Amazing Leap of Faith, Back of the Throat, and Our Enemies to Silk Road Rising audiences.

Each staged reading of The Mummy and the Revolution will be followed by a Q&A session with playwright Yussef El Guindi.

The Doctor is Indian
Friday, August 3rd at 8pm
Saturday, August 4th at 8pm
Sunday, August 5th at 2pm.

Written by Shane Sakhrani
Directed by Anish Jethmalani

If ever a family was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, it's the Gupta family of Mumbai, India! In Shane Sakhrani's hilarious THE DOCTOR IS INDIAN, an unexpected takeover of the Gupta family business lands it in the hands of an American corporation. Marital woes abound. Male-female dynamics are called into question. The specter of inter-racial dating rears its head. And a poisonous legacy threatens the security of the family home.

Traditionally, an Indian family would have suffered these struggles with silent resentment. But in this age of globalization, intrusive modes of communication and Western style family therapy turn tradition on its head. Globalization at its funniest!

Each staged reading of The Doctor is Indian will be followed by a Q&A session with playwright Shane Sakhrani. To purchase tickets visit www.silkroadrising.org, or call 312.857.1234 x 201.
