Sasha Soprano presents The Drag Queens of Comedy, in association with Peaches Christ Productions, Friday, May 12 at 7 and 10 p.m., at the Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport Ave. What has become a not-to-be-missed event in San Francisco since 2010, The Drag Queens of Comedy makes its Chicago debut with a line up of the world's most popular drag queen stars. The night of fun, shade and OMG's is brought to you by Sasha Soprano, who has presented Drag Queens of Comedy 2010-2016 in San Francisco, and features ten of the most outrageous and uproarious drag queens for this epic, not-to-be-missed, comedy extravaganza as this group of drag superstars come together for the first time on the same stage for two memorable performances. She has gained quite the following online and translates her humor on a daily basis through her horribly twisted updates and posts via social media. Soprano is a fourth generation native San Franciscan who also attended Saint Cecilia and Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep located in CathedrAl Hill. A bizarre cosmic collision propelled Alaska Thunderfuck 5000 to Earth in March 1966... and on to the fifth season of Logo TV's "RuPaul's Drag Race" in January 2013. ABOUT Peaches Christ, performer
Peaches Christ is the alter-ego of writer/director Joshua Grannell. Grannell attended film school at Penn State, where he originated the character of Peaches Christ while creating his Audience Award-winning senior thesis film "Jizzmopper: A Love Story." After graduation, he moved to San Francisco, spending his days managing Landmark Theatres' movie houses in the Bay Area and his nights immersed in the alternative drag world of Trannyshack. Grannell soon blended the two into "Midnight Mass," a summer series of classic and contemporary cult cinema that ran for 12 years at Landmark's Bridge Theatre and became the most successful midnight movie series in the nation, with notoriety coming from his infamous pre-show extravaganzas. Heklina gained fame as the creator, promoter and hostess of the legendary Trannyshack. She is a premier hostess and DJ for hire around San Francisco and, in addition to Trannyshack, has enjoyed success with her outdoor party at El Rio (with DJ Carnita and Stanley Frank), "Daytime Realness." She has been seen on the E! Entertainment Network, NBC's "Trauma," "The Cho Show," on VH1's "Playing it Straight," Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," BBC Television's "Around the World in 80 Raves," the Scissor Sister's "Filthy Gorgeous" video and as a guest on the Jerry Springer and Ricki Lake shows. In 2011, she introduced Britney Spears for Good Morning America. Her film credits include festival favorites Baby Jane? and All About Evil. ABOUT Coco Peru, performer
Storyteller/monologist Miss Coco Peru aka Clinton Leupp got his/her start as a downtown favorite in the cabaret world of New York after he wrote, produced, directed and starred in his first show "Miss Coco Peru in My Goddamn Cabaret," 20 years ago. On screen, Miss Coco is best known for her roles in Jim Fall's Fineline feature film, "Trick," Sundance 1999 and Richard Day's IFC feature length comedy "Girls will be Girls," Sundance 2002. For this film Peru shared the Best Actress Award with his two co-stars Jeffery Roberson and Jack Plotnick at the HBO Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen as well as the Best Actor Award at Outfest Film Festival. Other film appearances include "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar," "Nick And Jane" and "Straight-Jacket." She can be heard in the Disney animated feature, "The Wild" as "Mamma Hippo." Peru has appeared in follow-up "Girls will be Girls" short films, recreating her role from that now cult film on the small, small screen also known as the internet, and in 2011, Coco completed filming "Girls will be Girls 2," a sequel to the original Girls film which is planned to be released sometime soon.
