Salomee Spleet Presents Premiere of Duras' LA MUSICA, 4/19 - 5/12

Salomee Spleet is proud to announce the world premiere of a new translation by Chicago Dramatists' resident playwright Alice Austen of Marguerite Duras' LA MUSICA, directed by Noémi Schlosser, April 19 - May 12. Opening/Press night is Thursday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. Performances are Thursday, April 19, Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Chicago Dramatists, 1105 West Chicago Ave. The production then moves for the remainder of the run (Saturday, April 28, Friday, May 4 and May 11, Saturday, May 5 and May 12 at 7 p.m.) to Alliance Française, 54 West Chicago Ave. Tickets are $25, which includes a complimentary glass of French wine. There is an industry performance Monday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Alliance Française, tickets are $10 for industry professionals. Author Marguerite Duras describes the couple in La Musica as being torn apart by the forces of a passion so strong it both nourished and destroyed their relationship. On the eve of their divorce being finalized, the couple (Elizabeth Laidlaw and John Gray) meets at the hotel where, three short years before, they first fell in love and lived while their love was at its most passionate. Night falls and their conversation unfolds, secrets are revealed, emotions are heightened and a love may be rekindled or extinguished forever.

Marguerite Duras, 1914 - 1996, was one of France's most famous writers of the twentieth century. Her talents ranged across fiction, film, playwriting and journalism. Usually grouped with the exponents of the nouveau roman, Duras abandoned many of the conventions of the novel form. Her novels, many semi-autobiographical, usually mix themes of eroticism and death, often treating existential moments in people's lives. Avoiding the use of descriptive passages, she had her characters reveal themselves through what they say - and do not say.

Salomee Spleet, based in Belgium, made their Chicago debut in November 2011 with the dual productions of DATE ME! and Jean Cocteau's THE SOUND OF SILENCE. The company is a "fixed-fluid" collective founded by Noémi Schlosser. The idea for this company arose from the need to bring various branches of art and people from a variety of artistic milieus together.
