Remy Bumppo Theatre Company will explore complex relationships with truth, lies, and everything in between in its 21st season, "Truth Be Told."
Producing Artistic Director, Nick Sandys, speaks to the exciting and diverse lineup of the upcoming season: "We have chosen three very varied plays that entertainingly tackle the fascinating complexities of real (and "unreal") communication in our puzzling times: one American classic, one French translation, one British thriller; one epic, one satiric, one darkly mysterious, but all of them packed with astonishing language, startling humor, and mind-expanding thinking."
In this playful exploration of complex truths, Remy Bumppo is also collaborating with a number of new guest artists. "We are also continuing to diversify our art both on the stage and behind the scenes, broadening and deepening the range of perspectives and voices in the room," Sandys states, "I am particularly excited to be collaborating with two startlingly talented women directors, Krissy Vanderwarker and Keira Fromm, and with special guest artists Kareem Bandealy and Karen Aldridge, all of whom bring intelligence, passion, and rigor to their work, qualities we cherish highly."
From October 4 to November 12, 2017, Remy Bumppo will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of Thornton Wilder's American classic, The Skin Of Our Teeth, in a brand new production directed by Krissy Vanderwarker and featuring Kareem Bandealy as George Antrobus. In Wilder's epic vaudevillian tragicomedy, we follow the Antrobus family as they narrowly survive one end-of-the-world disaster after another-and all by the skin of their teeth.
The holiday season will bring much wit, romance, and delight with a world premiere adaptation of Eugène Scribe's forgotten gem, Puff: Believe It Or Not, translated by Ranjit Bolt. Directed by Nick Sandys and featuring Artistic Associates David Darlow, Kelsey Brennan, Greg Matthew Anderson, and Peter A. Davis, Puff is set in the salon society of 1840s Paris and is packed full of elegant plotting, quirky characters, fanciful fakery, and just downright lying, as it delightfully skewers the worlds of letters, politics and finance. Puff: Believe It Or Not will run from November 22, 2017 through January 7, 2018.
Remy Bumppo's 21st season will conclude with the shatteringly poetic and darkly humorousUS premiere of hang by debbie tucker green, directed by Keira Fromm and starring guest artists Karen Aldridge and Artistic Associate Annabel Armour. From March 21, 2018 through April 29, 2018, watch as language breaks down in the face of raw emotion when an unnamed woman must make an unspeakable decision about the fate of another human being.
Remy Bumppo has always striven to produce modern classic plays that contain central truths and vital relevance to the current times. But in this volatile American moment of national insecurities and impassioned but not always reasoned rhetoric, contemporary relevancy has become a central priority for the current conversation in the arts. "It is no longer enough to do plays about large ideas," says Sandys, "We must answer the question of 'why do this play now?' And right now more than ever, we feel the need for theatre to bring us together to contemplate, analyze, dissect, laugh at, mourn, and re-energize our complex human selves and the "truths" which we seek."
