Remy Bumppo Theatre Company's landmark 20th season features three plays that exemplify the company's lifelong dedication to mind-opening ideas and its special niche in the Chicago theatre community.
"Like the historical Age of Enlightenment, Remy Bumppo has always championed such principles as liberty, progress, reason, and the awakening of the mind," says Producing Artistic Director Nick Sandys, "This season, we have chosen plays that celebrate those core values."
The season will begin in October with Pirandello's Henry IV in a version by Tom Stoppard and directed by Sandys. Stoppard's re-imagining of this European classic is a gripping spiral of revelations that illuminate the distorted line between madness and sanity. For the holiday season, language lovers will rejoice for George Bernard Shaw's most enduring and endearing critique of high society at the turn of the century - Pygmalion. Directed by Artistic Associate Shawn Douglass and featuring Nick Sandys as Henry Higgins and Kelsey Brennan as Eliza Doolittle, Pygmalion will explore what defines who we are and who we might become.
The season with conclude in the spring with Born Yesterday by Garson Kanin and directed by Artistic Associate David Darlow. Following the intellectual awakening of classic American underdog Billie, Kanin's delightful and dangerous comedy asks who will survive the Washington political machine - brains, beauty, or brawn?
"This season is part of a three year conversation," says Sandys, "In our 2015/2016 season we're asking whether or not to choose new knowledge when the opportunity arises. In our 2016/2017 season we are answering that question with a resounding 'yes!'"All performances will be at the Greenhouse Theater Center located at 2257 N. Lincoln Ave.
