Ravinia Festival presents a grand finale of concerts as the 2010 summer season comes to a close, including New York-based chamber ensemble The Knights making their Ravinia debut at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, in the Martin Theatre. The program will include Copland's original 13-instrument version of Appalachian Spring and selections from Bernstein's West Side Story honoring the 20th anniversary of the deaths of these American composers. The concert will also include works by Frank, Adams and Golijov.
The annual Labor Day Spectacular will feature the Illinois Symphony Orchestra led by their music director Karen Lynne Deal and featuring pianist Alexander Kobrin in an All-Tchaikovsky program at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6, including the famous "1812" Overture presentation with live cannons. This concert will honor the conductor Erich Kunzel, who passed away in Sept. 2009. Kunzel is remembered as a Ravinia favorite who presided over 120 concerts at the festival since 1978.
Hershey Felder stars in his newest work, Maestro: The Art of Leonard Bernstein, a one-man show in the vein of Felder's previous recreations of Gershwin, Chopin and Beethoven. Felder will present scenes from Bernstein's life, accompanied by piano performances of his greatest works at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5, and 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7. Reserved seats for the Sept. 7 show are sold out, but lawn is available.
Virtuoso pianist Alon Goldstein, who made his Ravinia debut on the Rising Star series in 1996, returns to Ravinia at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1, for a recital in
Bennett • Gordon Hall. He is the winner of the Arianne Katcz Piano Competition in Tel Aviv, Nena Wideman Competition in the U.S., Francois Shapira competition in Israel and recipient of the 2004 Salon di Virtuosi Career Grant and America Israel Cultural Foundation scholarships. The program will include works by Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann and Brahms, along with reading of their letters and other writings. This concert is specially priced at $10 for reserved seats. There are no lawn sales for this concert.
Pop star Nelly Furtado makes her Ravinia debut at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept 3. Furtado, who won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "I'm Like a Bird," and singer of such number-one hits as "Give it to Me" and "Promiscuous," recently wrote and co-produced Mi Plan, her first collection of songs in Spanish. Dylan Murray will open the show.
Grammy Award-winning group Train makes its festival debut at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4. The roots rock group is known for such hits as the chart-climbing hit "Hey, Soul Sister," "Drops of Jupiter," "Meet Virginia" and "Calling All Angels." Vocalist Angel Taylor will open the show. All pavilion and lawn tickets for this performance are completely sold out.
Get your surf on with the legendary boys of summer, The Beach Boys, featuring guest drummer John Stamos, at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2. Known for such hits as "Kokomo" and "Good Vibrations," The Beach Boys are all-American beach-rock legends. The front of the pavilion will feature a special dancing section. Tickets for this special section are $60. The concert also features the World's Largest Lawn Party, which includes a lawn ticket and buffet dinner for $40.
Grammy Award-winning Tom Chapin & Friends will conclude Ravinia's Kraft Kids concert series with storytelling and music at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5.
